Pittsburg Officer And Suspect Wounded Inside Police Station — Nobody Will Say Whose Gun Fired
A Pittsburg police officer and a 31-year-old felony suspect were both wounded Thursday afternoon when a firearm went off during a physical struggle inside the Pittsburg Police Department’s booking area — before the suspect could ever be transferred to county jail.
Both were hospitalized. Neither has been named. And the department still has not answered the most basic question in the case: whose gun was it?
What happened
Per the city’s news release and multiple Bay Area outlets, the sequence ran like this:

Officers took a 31-year-old man into custody on a felony charge Thursday and brought him to the police department on Civic Drive for booking — the standard processing step before transfer to the county jail.
During booking, the man and an officer got into a physical struggle. Somewhere in that fight, a firearm discharged. The officer was struck in the abdomen. The suspect was also wounded.
By 5 p.m. the police station and the adjoining City Hall were taped off with crime scene tape, and city staff were escorted out. Both buildings stayed closed into the evening.
The open question — whose firearm?
The department’s public statement says only that “a firearm” discharged during the altercation. It does not say whose.
A report compiled for law-enforcement readers describes the suspect as armed during the struggle, and says the officer was hurt while entering a holding cell to move the suspect to county jail. If that’s accurate — if a felony suspect still had a gun in his possession through the arrest, the transport, and into the booking bay — that is a security failure at every link of the chain, and the kind of detail other agencies rewrite their custody procedures over.
If instead the gun that fired was the officer’s own weapon, the questions shift to weapon retention: how a grappling suspect got to it, and why a solo officer was moving a combative felony arrestee.
Neither agency has said which it is. Pittsburg PD has not identified the officer, the suspect, or the charges the man was being booked on.
Update log
September 4, 2026
Initial report confirmed: officer and suspect both wounded in booking-area struggle Thursday afternoon; officer struck in the abdomen; City Hall and police station shut down; no names released; source of the firearm not disclosed.
What we’re watching for
The names — of both the officer and the suspect. Whose firearm discharged, which determines whether this becomes a custody-security failure story or a weapon-retention story. The officer’s condition. The suspect’s charges and court appearance. And whether any booking-area camera video exists, and whether it gets released.
This is a developing story. Updates get added at the bottom of this post with dates as they’re confirmed. You can follow every developing case on the site feed: ohdangreally.com/category/developing/feed.
As always: everyone named in our coverage is presumed innocent until charged and proven otherwise, and this post will be updated — not quietly rewritten — as facts land.
If a suspect can end up in a fistfight with a cop next to a loaded gun inside a police station, what exactly is the booking process for?
