In the span of a single week, Georgia became the center of a national reckoning over automated license plate readers — and the newest name in the scandal belongs to a Clayton County sheriff’s deputy.

Erroll Farrell Jr., a 40-year-old deputy from Lithonia, turned himself in to authorities and was booked into the Clayton County Jail, charged with misuse of a license plate reader system. The arrest makes him part of a wave of Georgia law enforcement officers now facing consequences for what investigators say was the quiet exploitation of cameras that were sold to the public as crime-fighting tools.

His own department called in the state

The most striking part of the Farrell case is who picked up the phone. It was his own sheriff’s office that asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into how the county’s plate reader system was being used. When the results came back, the agency that installed the cameras helped build the case against its own deputy.

Farrell turned himself in on a Tuesday. After booking, his case was handed to the district attorney’s office, where prosecutors will decide what the charges become when the investigation wraps. Misuse of a license plate reader system carries real prison exposure in Georgia — the legislature wrote the offense specifically to stop law enforcement from treating the camera network as a personal search engine.

A purge that keeps growing

Farrell is not an isolated case. In the same stretch of days, a Georgia Department of Corrections Special Agent in Charge was arrested for the same kind of misuse, and two Richmond County deputies were charged after investigators say they ran plates through the Flock network for reasons that had nothing to do with police work.

In Hall County, the story took a different turn: three deputies resigned after an internal audit flagged their plate reader searches — no charges yet, but the audit is the reason anyone found out. And earlier this summer, a national report described the pattern as a chord striking across the country, with Georgia at its center.

What the lookups looked like

The numbers in this series tell the story better than any adjective could. A Florida deputy ran a plate 717 times while trying to track his estranged wife. An officer in another state logged 2,386 lookups. Two more cases topped 2,000 searches each. A Texas officer facing 78 counts. In case after case, the searches weren’t about crime — they were about women, ex-partners, grudges and curiosity, run through cameras paid for with public money.

What’s next for Farrell

Farrell’s case now sits with the district attorney, and the GBI’s file is the road map. He has not entered a plea, and like everyone on this channel, he is accused, not convicted.

The Flock series continues — because the cameras are still on, the lookups are still logged, and as Georgia just proved, the logs are watching the watchers now.
