Greenfield Police Chief Jay Johnson Faces Firing After 67 Misconduct Allegations

Comments Off on Greenfield Police Chief Jay Johnson Faces Firing After 67 Misconduct Allegations

Greenfield, Wisconsin has been paying its police chief not to police for 17 months. Now the city has released the report that could end Jay Johnson’s career for good: a 722-page internal investigation detailing 67 allegations of misconduct — and the mayor has formally asked to fire him.

What the 722 pages say

The city released the internal investigation this week, and the allegations run from pressuring staff to drink on the job to misuse of department surveillance equipment. Mayor Michael Neitzke has formally asked the Police and Fire Commission to remove Johnson from the department he has led since 2016.

Johnson has been on paid leave since April 2025 — seventeen months, at full salary, while the investigation grew around him.

The criminal charges underneath it

The internal report isn’t the chief’s only problem. Johnson was charged with felony misconduct in public office, accused of having a department pole camera installed at his own home. Then prosecutors charged him a second time, saying he tried to delete evidence from his own seized phone.

Where it stands

The Police and Fire Commission’s decision on termination is pending. If the commission removes him, Johnson becomes the rare chief fired not by a scandal that broke in a day, but by a 722-page paper stack built over a year and a half.

We’ll track the commission’s ruling here.
