Michigan Prison Guard Jonathan Sipes Charged — Other Guards Were Afraid Of Him

Comments Off on Michigan Prison Guard Jonathan Sipes Charged — Other Guards Were Afraid Of Him

A Michigan prison guard is charged after investigators say other staff were afraid of him — and the coworker who reported him did it the same night it happened.

The accusation

Jonathan Sipes, 36, worked at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian. The Michigan Attorney General charged him with four counts — the most serious carries up to 15 years — accusing him of repeatedly targeting a fellow officer for more than a year, inside the prison and in its parking lot.

The report came fast

According to the state, the coworker reported him the night it happened, at shift change — not days later, not through channels, but immediately. Investigators say that speed matters: it turned a pattern that had built up over a year into charges within months. Sipes was arrested and released pending his next court date.

Why staff feared him

The charging documents describe a guard whose own colleagues avoided being alone with him. Prison staff work shifts alongside the same officers for years — and prosecutors say that familiarity is exactly what the accused relied on. The state’s case rests on the claim that no one at the facility, inmate or officer, was safe from the conduct.

What’s next

Sipes is due back in court October 14 for a preliminary exam — the hearing where a judge decides whether the evidence is strong enough for trial. The Attorney General’s office has said more witnesses from inside the facility are expected to testify.

He is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The October 14 hearing will be the first real test of the state’s case.
