Vancouver Officer Kal Dosanjh Ran A Kids Charity — Charged With Defrauding 19 Victims Of $3 Million

Comments Off on Vancouver Officer Kal Dosanjh Ran A Kids Charity — Charged With Defrauding 19 Victims Of $3 Million

He spent 26 years with the Vancouver Police Department. He ran a charity built for kids — basketball camps, anti-gang programs, the community’s favorite cop. Now he faces nine charges, 19 alleged victims, and more than $3 million — with the police chief himself announcing the case.

The officer is Kalwinder “Kal” Dosanjh, CEO of the KidsPlay Youth Foundation. Prosecutors say the respected public image concealed a scheme: money meant for kids’ programs and housing investors that never went where it was promised.

The charges include fraud, theft, and breach of trust. Prosecutors say 19 victims lost more than $3 million combined. And the announcement did not arrive as a routine press release — the police chief stood at a podium and read the allegations against his own 26-year veteran.

The Charity

KidsPlay was the brand everyone knew. Basketball camps for local kids. Anti-gang mentoring. Programs that put a beloved officer’s face on the community’s trust. Prosecutors say money donated for those programs, and money put up by housing investors, was diverted instead — allegedly into Dosanjh’s own hands.

Nineteen victims is not a rounding error. It is a pattern, laid out count by count: fraud over $5,000, theft, breach of trust. Nine charges in total.

The alleged conduct cuts in two directions at once. Charity money is supposed to come from donors who trusted a famous face. Investor money is supposed to come back with returns. Prosecutors say neither pot went where it was supposed to — and that the same man was running both sides of it.

His Answer

Dosanjh denies everything. His position is that the evidence will speak for itself — and he is entitled to that presumption until a court says otherwise. But the investors are not waiting on the criminal process. They have sued him in civil court too, meaning two separate fights over the same missing millions.

What Comes Next

Two courtrooms, one question: where did the money go? The criminal charges and the civil suit will take time to work through. A 26-year career and a kids’ charity both now hang on the answer.

The irony is hard to miss. The anti-gang work Dosanjh built his reputation on was about keeping kids away from people who take what is not theirs. That is now the exact allegation against him, at a scale few street-level cases ever reach.

Charges are allegations, not verdicts. But when a police chief reads fraud counts against his own officer from a podium, the department’s view of the evidence is already on the record.
