Jail Guard Chance Panther Arrested On The Worst Charges There Are
A west Arkansas jail guard walked into custody this week — on the worst charges there are.
Chance Michael Panther, 26, worked as a corrections officer at the Pope County Detention Center in Russellville. On October 9, Sheriff Blake Wilson announced that Panther had been immediately terminated and taken into custody the same day, following a joint investigation by the Arkansas State Police and Homeland Security.
He’s charged with distribution, possession, and viewing of child sexual abuse material — a federal-grade investigation run out of a county jail’s own staff room.
The sheriff’s statement drew a hard line: the alleged conduct happened off duty and did not involve the facility’s computers — outside, as Wilson put it, what the detention center expects of its staff. His full statement: “We have zero tolerance for crimes of this nature,” adding that anyone engaged in such acts will be held accountable and, when supported by the evidence, arrested.
The county’s own inmate roster already carries Panther’s booking photo — 26 years old, booked at the facility he used to staff.
The court filings aren’t public yet; the case is hours old. But a joint state-and-federal investigation doesn’t open over nothing, and the paperwork — when it lands — will show whether prosecutors treat this as a state case, a federal one, or both.
Oh Dang Really covers police and government misconduct cases as they develop. This story is developing; all charges are allegations until proven in court.
