Family Says They Were Told A Missouri Deputy’s Vehicle Was An Unknown Hit-And-Run Driver

Persephone Berger, a 16-year-old from Missouri, was lying in a roadway in St. Francois County before dawn on Saturday, October 3 when a sheriff’s deputy, driving toward a 911 call, ran over her without seeing her, according to the sheriff’s office. She did not survive. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

What turned a tragedy on a dark rural road into a fight over transparency is what the family says happened next. According to the family, the department first told them the crash was a hit-and-run with an unknown driver — and that they only learned the vehicle belonged to a St. Francois County deputy from witnesses at the scene. That account has been carried by outlets from St. Louis to CBS News and People magazine.

More than a week later, the deputy has not been publicly named. The sheriff’s office, led by Sheriff Jeff Crites, has announced no suspension, no leave, and no discipline. The deputy’s status remains unknown, and no charges have been filed.

The office has publicly said the deputy was responding to a call and did not see the teen lying in the roadway. What it has not explained is why the family was initially given a different account, or how long Persephone was on that road before she was found.

The community is not letting those questions go. Hundreds gathered at a candlelight vigil for the West County High School student, where local coverage described a sea of pink among classmates and neighbors. Photos from the vigil show mourners packed shoulder-to-shoulder, candles raised, some holding her picture.

The case has now been covered by at least a dozen national and regional outlets — CBS News, People, the New York Post, and stations across Missouri and Arkansas — almost all of them zeroing in on the same gap: a family told one thing, witnesses saying another, and an unnamed deputy still on the job as far as any public record shows.

What happens next depends on the highway patrol’s findings and the prosecuting attorney’s office. The patrol’s crash report, the full autopsy, and any charging decision will determine whether this stays a crash file — or becomes a case about how a department talks to a family that just lost their daughter.

This story will be updated as the investigation develops.
