Detention Deputy Karla Beltran Posed With Inmates At Bexar County Jail Window

A Bexar County detention deputy posed for photos with inmates through a holding-area window — middle fingers up in one frame — and lasted just over 100 days before the sheriff’s office cut her with a dismissal designed to skip the appeal process entirely.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The photos hit social media first: a Bexar County detention deputy on the wrong side of a holding-area window, posing with the inmates behind it. In one frame she throws a middle finger at the camera. In another, an inmate holds a phone up to the glass. Karla Beltran is in all of them, in uniform, looking less like a guard at a county jail and more like a tourist at an attraction.

The confirmation came the next day. Bexar County officials said Beltran, a detention deputy, was fired Monday, October 12 — via probationary dismissal.

That phrase is doing a lot of work. Beltran had been on the job exactly 100 days, having started July 1. Employees still inside their probationary period can be dismissed immediately, with no civil service appeal. One day past probation, and this firing would have come with a hearing, paperwork, and a fight. She missed the deadline by zero days.

What nobody has explained — not the sheriff’s office, not Beltran, not anyone — is the basics: who took the pictures, and why a deputy ended up posing like that at a jail window with the people she was assigned to watch. The photos were never explained. They just went viral, and then she was gone.

No criminal charges have been announced. The deputy’s own camera roll did what internal affairs usually takes months to do — and the county’s employment structure did the rest. One hundred days in, one photo op, one middle finger, career over before probation even ended.
