UK Detective Emma Gardner Jailed: Handed Police Files To Her Bouncer Boyfriend

A detective, her boyfriend, and police files

Detective Inspector Emma Gardner of North Wales Police was sentenced Friday to eight months in prison under the Computer Misuse Act — for a very simple reason: she looked up people she wasn’t investigating, and passed what she found to the man she was dating.

Prosecutors said she ran unauthorized logins into police systems and passed confidential records to her boyfriend, a nightclub bouncer. The court heard the files covered the bouncer himself and three women. Her defense was blunt: “I believe every access was for a policing purpose.” The jury rejected that — she was convicted after a trial.

How the consequences stacked

She was convicted after trial in July 2026. That August, a misconduct hearing barred her from policing. On Friday the sentence landed: eight months, immediate custody. The force had suspended her while the criminal case was ongoing — the department put its own detective in the dock, and the courts finished the job.

What this case is really about

Every US department this channel covers runs on the same software layer: state database access wrapped around records of real people. The Everett case this week was a drunk officer in a patrol car. The Harpe case was an officer sharing her Flock login. Gardner is what that access looks like when a detective uses it for a boyfriend — and a UK court just set the price: eight months.

The details of who she looked up and why remain court-documented but limited. The conviction stands. The badge is gone.
