Atlanta Detective Ronald Sluss Accused Of Stealing Beer From Publix In Undercover Car
An Atlanta police detective is accused of walking out of a Publix in Canton with a $18.99 twelve-pack of SweetWater IPA he never paid for — then driving away in an undercover Atlanta Police Department vehicle.
How a $19 beer run unraveled
Cherokee County deputies say surveillance video from the Publix on Hickory Flat Highway shows Detective Ronald Sluss carrying the 12-pack through the checkout area on Sept. 16 while holding what appeared to be a receipt. He never stopped at a register — he walked straight through self-checkout and out the door.
The store manager got suspicious watching him pass every point of sale, followed him into the parking lot, and photographed his truck. It turned out to be an unmarked APD vehicle. The manager called 911 — not knowing he was reporting a cop.
Deputies traced the truck back to APD, where supervisors identified their own detective, then confronted Sluss at his home. The arresting deputy noted a strong odor of alcohol on his breath — and the same odor inside the undercover vehicle. Sluss was booked on a misdemeanor theft charge.
What happens now
APD has relieved Sluss of duty and placed him in a non-enforcement status while the Office of Professional Standards investigates — but he remains employed.
