Prison Sergeant Rachel Black Walked Free No Bail In FSP Smuggling Case
She was accused of running a drug operation inside one of Florida’s toughest prisons — and she walked out of jail without paying a dime.
Sergeant Rachel Black, charged with conspiring with her inmate boyfriend to sell drugs inside Florida State Prison at Raiford, was released on her own recognizance. Prosecutors did not oppose it. A judge signed the release order September 25. No cash bond.
The Bradford County court docket shows her September 23 bond motion went unopposed. Her arraignment followed September 30. Next hearing: October 14.
The Operation Described In Charges
Investigators say the product included LSD — known on the yard as “paper dope,” LSD soaked into paper and repackaged for sale — and that it was staged in a mop closet where it could be reached from inside.
The money left a trail. One documented sale pulled in $1,800, and charges say it was paid by the girlfriend of the incarcerated buyer.
Her alleged partner in the operation: her boyfriend, an incarcerated man at the same facility she worked.
A sergeant at a state prison sits over the housing units, the shifts, and the movement of people and supplies. That’s what makes the mop-closet detail land — the contraband wasn’t slipped past her, charges say it was staged and managed by her.
Why The Release Stings
Own recognizance means a written promise to appear. No bond company, no collateral, no cash. The state that filed the charges didn’t spend a word arguing she should be held.
Black is 38, from Jacksonville, and the charge — conspiracy to introduce contraband into a state correctional facility — is a felony. These are accusations, not findings: prosecutors still have to prove the conspiracy in court, and she hasn’t entered a plea on record here.
The math is the story. An $1,800 sale inside a state prison. LSD staged in a mop closet. And a sergeant walking out of the Bradford County jail the same week, on nothing but her signature and a court date.
On October 14, the case goes back in front of a judge. Whether she should have walked out on a written promise is the question her neighbors are asking.
