Comments Off on Canton Cops Who Restrained Frank Tyson Avoid Jail — Family Predicted It

They said it out loud at the plea hearing. Frank Tyson’s brother told the court the officers who restrained his brother in 2024 “wouldn’t do a day in jail. Not a day.” On Sept. 24, a judge proved him right.

The sentences

Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch — the two Canton, Ohio officers caught on officer-worn camera restraining Tyson at a Circle K in April 2024 — were sentenced Sept. 24 to zero additional days in jail. They pleaded guilty in August to dereliction of duty and failure to report after the original felony charge was dropped in a plea deal, and Judge James Kimbler suspended every jail day, crediting the four days they’d already served.

How the case got here

Tyson, 53, was restrained at the Circle K while experiencing a mental health crisis. The officer-worn camera footage led to criminal charges — a rare outcome — and drew national attention to Canton. We covered the original charges when they dropped; the sentencing closes the criminal chapter the way the family predicted it would.

What’s still coming

A $13 million federal lawsuit against the city and the officers heads to trial in 2028. The family’s civil case — not the criminal one — is now where accountability lives.
