An Indiana sheriff’s deputy searched one license plate 2,055 times over eight months — and logged every query as “city planning,” a duty he never held. A routine audit caught it, Indiana State Police investigated, and former Jackson County Deputy Skylar Thompson now faces felony official misconduct and fraud charges.
Charges are allegations. Thompson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
This is the latest in a pattern: a Florida deputy ran 717 searches on his estranged wife’s plate, a Texas constable ran 2,386, and a Sarasota officer tracked the mother of his child. The Institute for Justice has documented 100+ cases of police misusing plate readers nationwide.
