
Dexter, Missouri. K-9 Apollo — an active drug dog the city paid $8,900 for — dropped from 67 pounds to 41 in his handler’s kennel. The necropsy said starvation. Retired K-9 Knox was found with heartworms and worn teeth. Officer Derrick Durall said he fed them twice a day and never noticed.
He was charged with two felony counts of animal torture. The plea deal erased both felonies. His sentence: 15 days.
In Missouri, Max’s Law (SB 765, 2024) makes harming a police dog a felony — up to 7 years. His handler got 15 days. Same dog. Different rules.
