Jail Deputy Kevin Lacy Fired And Arrested Same Day After Mail Audit Caught His Own Notes
Deputy Kevin Lacy worked the Arapahoe County jail. This week, he was booked into it — as an inmate. The Colorado detention deputy was fired and arrested on the same day, and the paper trail that caught him is the strangest part of the story.
Lacy, 37, faces a felony charge of sexual conduct in a correctional institution plus a misdemeanor count of official misconduct. Court documents say he showed an inmate a naked photo of himself and touched her.
But no camera caught him. According to the Denver Post, it was a mail audit that ended it. In late September, a jail employee screening inmate mail flagged notes Lacy had written — notes describing the encounters in his own words.
That’s the same mail system jail staff are supposed to enforce. The audit read his own mail back to him, and the sheriff’s office placed him on paid leave before the month was out.
On October 6th, the other shoe dropped twice in one day: Lacy was fired and booked into the same county facility where he had worked.
Lacy is the latest in a growing line of officers caught by their own systems — databases, plate readers, cameras, and now, the mail. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has not announced a first court date.
Charges are allegations; Lacy is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Oh Dang Really is watching for his first court appearance.
